Stevie Gerrard is leaving Liverpool after a long career – but he rarely played in a great Liverpool side. So the Telegraph’s question: “Is he Liverpool’s best player ever?”, struck me as overstating it a bit.

But then you think about it… In fact, I think, maybe he is. A genuine talent, a true team man and a tireless toiler (often after lost causes in an England shirt).

Stick anyone decent in front, to the side or behind him and he generally made them look brilliant, as well as scoring any number of crucial ‘captain’s goals’ in his latter years.

A shame, with England, he didn’t ever quite get enough quality around him, to show just how good he really was.
