For some classical ‘blood and thunder’, I recommend Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky.
The first six minutes of the 12 minute ‘Battle on the Ice’ is epic stuff; and accompanied Eisenstein’s equally epic 1938 film. It also provided an inspiration for the theme tune for Jaws – dum dum, dum dum, duh dahdah…
Most compilations, like the one I have (below), throw in Lieutenant Kijé – which includes the Christmas classic ‘Troika’.
